Gate Lodge

Gate Lodge is the first building that visitors see as they enter the main gates of Rideau Hall. It is a Recognized Federal Heritage building, currently occupied by the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General.

Recent reports confirm the poor condition of the building. The building is severely deteriorated, with a failing roof, crumbling exterior masonry and mechanical systems that are near end of life.

The NCC is making durable, long-lasting and low maintenance upgrades to Gate Lodge.

About the project

This project will restore the building’s exterior, as well as upgrade the entire building and its systems.

Scope

Specifically, this project will

  • Improve accessibility – Universal Access (UA) – Add a main floor, gender neutral, UA washroom, upgrade door accessibility and install a sloped walkway at one entrance.
  • Improve structural integrity – Rehabilitate the brick masonry and foundations, floors and crawl space. Reconstruct the character-defining 1868 chimney.
  • Upgrade roof and drainage – Replace roof sheathing, improve rainwater management with new gutters and downspouts and regrade for better drainage.
  • Enhance energy efficiency – Add wall insulation, remove natural gas source heating and update the mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Renovate the interior – Upgrade layout, finishes and functionality.
  • Repair windows and doors – Restore as needed and ensure weatherproofing.

About Gate Lodge

Gate Lodge is a well-known landmark at Rideau Hall, enhancing the picturesque character of the site and maintaining a strong connection to its historic surroundings.

Gate Lodge was built in 1868 as a two-story octagonal brick structure, designed by Frederick Preston Rubidge. Several extensions were built over the years, with only two remaining; a north wing, which was built in approximately 1879, and an east wing that dates back to 1938.

The NCC is committed to addressing the official residences in the National Capital Region. In 2021, we published a report on the condition of Canada’s official residences. Our assessment ranked Gate Lodge as a high priority building within the Official Residences portfolio.
