A new poll released today shows an increase in the number of residents of Canada’s Capital Region who participated in the National Capital Commission’s public consultations. The poll, which was conducted by Environics Research Group, surveyed more than 1,500 residents of the region in November–December 2016 and February 2017.

Eleven percent (11%) of residents of Canada’s Capital who responded to the poll say they have attended a public consultation or information session, or have provided input to the NCC. That is more than one person in ten, a noticeable increase from 2014, when only seven percent of respondents claimed to provide input to NCC plans and activities.

Other findings include the following:

  • Almost all residents of Canada’s Capital Region (94%) believe that the National Capital Commission “has a role to play in making the Capital an inspiring reflection of Canada and Canadians.”
  • Forty percent (40%) of residents in Canada’s Capital Region have heard of opportunities to provide input to the NCC, up from 26% in 2014.
  • Fifty-six percent (56%) of residents in Canada’s Capital Region say that the NCC does a good job of consulting and informing the public about its plans and programs, up from 48% in 2014.
  • Seventy-three percent (73%) of residents in Canada’s Capital Region “trust the NCC to make good decisions.”
  • Seventy-two percent (72%) of residents in Canada’s Capital Region feel that the NCC shares their values.
  • Sixty-two percent (62%) of residents in Canada’s Capital Region perceive the NCC as being well managed.
  • More than half of residents in Canada’s Capital Region (55% up from 29% in 2014) are now able to identify the NCC unaided when read a description of its mandate.
  • The NCC remains most widely recognized for the Rideau Canal Skateway (55% compared with 52% in 2014), followed by Gatineau Park (47% versus 45% in 2014), the Greenbelt (46% versus 40% in 2014) and the parkways (46% versus 39% in 2014).

The NCC will use the results of this survey to continue its proactive communications and public engagement efforts. Upcoming public consultations will be conducted on the following plans and activities:

In addition, the NCC launched the fourth season of its popular Capital Urbanism Lab lecture series, a space for debate and dialogue on Capital-building and urbanism issues.
