Béatrice Craig is a professor emerita at the University of Ottawa, where she also taught Canadian history and women’s history from 1985 to 2018. She is the author of Homespun Capitalists and Backwoods Consumers: The Rise of a Market Culture in Eastern Canada (2009); The Land in Between; The Upper St. John Valley, Prehistory to World War One (co-authored with Maxime Dagenais, 2009); Women and Business Since 1500: Invisible Presences in Europe and North America? (2015 ) and Female Enterprise Behind the Discursive Veil in Nineteenth Century Northern France (2016), as well as numerous articles in 19th century rural Canadian history, and the history of women in business. She has served as co-director and, later, treasurer of Histoire sociale / Social History, a leading publication of socio-historical research internationally, and has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 2016. Béatrice Craig has also received several awards and recognitions. In particular, her book Homespun Capitalists has been recognized with the 2010 Prix Lionel-Groulx from the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française for the best book on the history of French America; the 2010 Clio Prize (Atlantic Canada), awarded by the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) for the best book on the history of the Atlantic region; and the CHA’s 2010 Sir John A. Macdonald Prize for the best book in Canadian history. In addition, Homespun Capitalists was a finalist for the 2015 François-Xavier Garneau Medal (the CHA’s most prestigious prize, awarded every five years, to honour outstanding Canadian contribution to historical research). Béatrice Craig holds degrees in English literature and education, and American studies, from the Université de Lille, a PhD in History from the University of Maine, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Maine.
