National Capital Region — The National Capital Commission (NCC) is proud to announce the opening of the Canadian Museum of History Dock, its first recreational dock on the Quebec shore of the Ottawa River. Located in the heart of Gatineau, this new universally accessible waterfront space offers residents and visitors a unique relaxation and swimming experience with spectacular views of Parliament Hill.
This new destination is part of the NCC’s vision to bring the public closer to the Capital’s waterways and provide more opportunities to enjoy its shorelines. Following the success of the NCC River House, the Dow’s Lake Dock and the brand-new East Wharf, the Canadian Museum of History Dock provides even more people with free access to the river, just steps from downtown.
Visitors can relax in an atmosphere inspired by summers at the cottage, with numerous Muskoka chairs placed throughout the site. Swimming enthusiasts will be able to enjoy an unsupervised deep-water swimming area equipped with a floating island and ladders that provide easy access to the water.
The NCC is partnering with Ottawa Riverkeeper to monitor water quality throughout the season. Regular bacteriological testing will be conducted, and results will be published on the Swim Guide platform, allowing visitors to check conditions before their visit.
“The opening of the Canadian Museum of History Dock marks an important milestone in our commitment to restoring public access to the shores of the Ottawa River and creating outstanding public spaces for residents and visitors. Thanks to the exemplary collaboration of the Ville de Gatineau and the Canadian Museum of History, today we are offering a community gathering place where residents and visitors can cool off, relax and take in one of the Capital’s most beautiful views.”
– Tobi Nussbaum, Chief Executive Officer, National Capital Commission
“Gatineau was built around its waterways. Our rivers are part of our history and identity. In partnership with the National Capital Commission, we are renewing that connection by creating new opportunities for residents to enjoy clean, safe and accessible shorelines. The Canadian Museum of History Dock is a welcome addition for families, residents and visitors, who will be able to fully enjoy the Ottawa River right in the heart of our city.”
– Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, Mayor of Gatineau
