Privacy Notice – Activity Registration

The NCC volunteer application process and program management is done online via Better Impact Volunteer Management Software. Your personal information will be collected by the application in accordance with their privacy policy and managed by the NCC to respect your privacy.

The Citizen Science Program helps biologists gain a better understanding of Gatineau Park’s biodiversity and helps protect it as well. Initiatives under this program include ecological monitoring and restoration activities.

This joint program between the NCC and Friends of Gatineau Park aims to strengthen the health of ecosystems and species in Gatineau Park.

Description

Title: Citizen Science Volunteer
Location: Gatineau Park and surrounding ecological corridors

Ecological monitoring activities involve following science-based protocols in nature, observing wildlife, and collecting and reporting data.

Ecological restoration activities involve physical work of removing invasive plants and planting native species.

Conditions

Commitment and schedule

Citizen Science activities happen year-round, with outings during the day, evenings, weekdays and weekends. Volunteers are typically needed for three-hour shifts.

2026 activities include:

  • Monarch mission: Inventory of eggs, larvae and adults in potential monarch habitat
    • Location: Philippe Lake sector
    • Schedule: July and August
  • Common loon monitoring: Inventory of loon adults and young from canoe or kayak
    • Location: La Pêche Lake, Meech Lake, Philippe Lake and Taylor Lake
    • Schedule: July and August
  • Periwinkle challenge: Removal of invasive plants or planting of indigenous plants
    • Location: Gatineau Park Visitor Centre Sector
    • Schedule: May and September
  • Buckthorn: Watering  young plants and controlling buckthorn to ensure the success of the ecological restoration project near Lac-des-Fées

Requirements

  • 16 years of age or older
  • Provide own transport to and from Gatineau Park

Assets

  • Comfortable working in the field in different weather conditions
  • For loon monitoring: Provide own canoe or kayak, and join activity with a partner
