In December 2022, an important milestone in conservation was reached: the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework, a new plan aimed at stopping and reversing biodiversity loss. One of the key goals is to protect at least 30% of the planet by 2030 through protected areas like national parks, nature reserves and other effective and equitable area-based conservation measures (OECMs).
For the first time, the convention emphasized the word “effective” in defining what protected areas must achieve.
This presentation will look at what “effective” protection means and how this could impact Canada, Quebec, the municipality of Chelsea and Gatineau Park.
