The LeBreton Bridge on the Kichi Zībī Mīkan is at the end of its lifecycle. Its replacement will involve demolishing the existing bridge and building a new one. Work is expected to be completed in summer 2020.

About the project

In order to minimize the construction impact on traffic, a detour road for motorists will be implemented during the construction of the new bridge.

Phase 1: May 15 to end of June 2019

Work will involve the construction of a temporary detour road parallel to Kichi Zībī Mīkan to reduce the impact on traffic.

  • Detour road with same capacity as Kichi Zībī Mīkan.
  • Two lanes in each direction, with reduced speed limit from 60 km/h to 40 km/h.

Phase 2: July 2019 to summer 2020

  • Opening of the detour road.
  • Construction of the new bridge.
  • Work to mainly occur Monday to Friday, between 6 am and 7 pm. There will be occasional work on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Signage to facilitate traffic flow.
  • Motorists and cyclists to exercise caution on-site.

This project is part of the NCC’s major infrastructure projects made possible with the Government of Canada’s $55-million investment from the 2018 federal budget.
