We would like to remind people not to venture onto the surface of the Rideau Canal. The Skateway closed for the season on February 26, 2020.

The ice layer is extremely hazardous, and water can now be seen on the surface. Beneath the surface, water depth varies from approximately one metre (about three feet) to over 4.3 metres (over 14 feet). We urge the public to keep personal safety in mind, and to respect the red flags, barricades and signs installed at various access points.

In preparation for the 2020 navigation season, Parks Canada began routine springtime operations on March 16, which will likely result in changes to the surface. Parks Canada is also asking the public to stay off the canal surface, and always to exercise caution in and around the lockstation areas.
