News Release

September 2, 2022

National Capital RegionThe National Capital Commission (NCC) wants to thank everyone who made use of its assets this summer. Whether you explored Gatineau Park aboard the shuttle, strolled along the parkways or grabbed a bite at one of the NCC Bistros, many options were available for all to discover and enjoy the National Capital Region.

As we shift from summer to fall, there is still one long weekend to enjoy NCC beaches, the free transportation service to Philippe Lake and 24-hour access to the Queen Elizabeth Driveway for active users.

Here are some highlights of our summer season.

  • The Gatineau Park shuttle, in service on weekends from June 25 to August 28, was used thousands of times this summer. This allowed people of all ages and abilities to visit popular destinations in the parkway sector for free. If you’ve had the chance to use the Gatineau Park shuttle, let us know your thoughts by filling out this survey.
  • Close to 320,000 visits — and still counting, until Labour Day — on NCC parkways while they were open for active use during 2022.
  • Over to 17,000 overnight stays have been booked in Gatineau Park so far. While the Philippe Lake campground will be modernized beginning this fall, there is still time and availability to book a stay until October 10, 2022.

Here are some suggestions when planning your next outing.

Labour Day: Last day to enjoy supervised NCC beaches
This long weekend, escape the heat, and take your last dip at an NCC beach. Monday, September 5, 2022, will be the last day of supervision of the NCC’s ever-popular beaches. In total this season, NCC beaches will have seen 81 days of swimming. For details about beach status, water quality and facilities, visit our swimming page.

Ride to the Philippe Lake area for free
On Saturdays and Sundays, until September 4, 2022, explore the Philippe Lake area free of charge using public transit. The Transcollines 924 line stops at the Breton Beach parking lot. There are a number of activities available at Breton Beach. Cool down at Philippe Lake, explore the trails or rent a non-motorized boat nearby!

Fall schedule on Gatineau Park parkways
Building on public feedback, the third year of the Gatineau Park parkways pilot project continues its summer schedule until September 23, 2022. As we roll into fall, a new schedule will take effect on September 24, 2022. The Champlain, Gatineau and Fortune Lake parkways will be open for active use daily until noon, and then shared with motor vehicles from noon until 30 minutes after sunset. Check out the schedule for more information.

Power-assisted bikes and mobility scooter rentals
To increase accessibility in Gatineau Park, the NCC is pleased to have partnered with the Relais plein air to offer free rentals of four-wheeled electric scooters to people with reduced mobility. Power-assisted bikes are also available for rent at the Relais plein air, as well as at the new rental kiosk in parking lot P8, operated by Nomades du parc.

Queen Elizabeth Driveway
This weekend (and Labour Day) marks the last chance to enjoy 24-hour-a-day access to the Queen Elizabeth Driveway for active users. From September 10 to October 10, it will be accessible on weekends from Saturday at 8 am through to Sunday at 8 pm.

NCC Weekend Bikedays, presented by Nokia
As part of the NCC Weekend Bikedays, presented by Nokia, active users will continue to have exclusive access every weekend (including Labour Day and Thanksgiving) to the Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier parkways, from 8 am to 4 pm, until October 10, 2022 (Thanksgiving).

A big thanks to our partners, Nokia, Claridge Homes, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, ServicePlus, CAA, and Repair and Run, for their contributions to this program!

It’s not over yet!
We make it easy for people to rediscover less-visited areas and hidden gems of the Capital with our summer activities interactive map. Just select an activity, and the sharable map will suggest options within the downtown core, the Greenbelt or Gatineau Park!

Don’t forget to visit one of the NCC Bistros, and enjoy an assortment of fresh food and refreshments while taking in exceptional views.
