The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that two significant sections of the Rideau Canal Skateway will reopen tomorrow, Friday, January 31, 2020, at 8 am — just in time for Winterlude!
The NCC Ice Safety Committee has deemed the following sections of the Skateway safe for skating:
- between Waverley Street (km 1.2) and Bank Street (km 4.5);
- between Bronson (km 5.4) Avenue and Hartwells Locks (km 7.8)
The NCC team is continuing to work hard to open the remaining sections.
The NCC urges the public to refrain from venturing onto the closed sections of the Rideau Canal Skateway. Please respect the barricades and the signs installed at access points. Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide serious deterioration of the ice thickness.
Managed by the NCC since the 1970–1971 season, the world’s largest skating rink receives, on average, close to one million visits every year, with an average of 21,000 visits daily.
The Skateway is one of Winterlude’s prime destinations, and will host several events, including the BeaverTails Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival, the Timbits hockey zone, the Tim Hortons Shinny Hockey Day and the Winterlude Triathlon. The 42nd edition of this flagship event in Canada’s Capital Region will take place from January 31 to February 17, 2020.
January 31, 2020 also marks the opening of the winter sports rink at Dows Lake where the public can reserve ice time to practise a winter sport like ringette or broomball, or enjoy a game of shinny hockey the old-fashioned way. The winter sports rink is one of the special activities created to celebrate the 50th season.
