The National Capital Commission and the Centre d’écologie et d’agriculture urbaine de Gatineau today officially opened the Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion at the Moore Farm. It is one of the NCC’s Confederation Pavilions marking Canada’s 150th anniversary.

In 2015, the Coopérative de solidarité de la ferme Moore created the Centre d’écologie et d’agriculture urbaine de Gatineau at the Moore Farm Estate. Today, the Centre has exceeded its initial objectives, and has become a very popular destination, in addition to being a model for urban agriculture and sustainable development in Gatineau.

Visitors can see and appreciate the best that nature has to offer, by taking part in programs, workshops, conferences, archaeological digs, and activities based on themes such as ecology, biodiversity, the food sector and sustainable urban agriculture.

The Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion is open to the public every day, from 9 am to 4 pm, including holidays.

The NCC’s Confederation Pavilions—a series of underused but architecturally significant buildings brought back to life by NCC partners to celebrate Canada 150—are welcoming residents and visitors during 2017.

Quotes

Canada 150 is the perfect opportunity to highlight the wealth of our heritage and the importance of responsible and sustainable management of the environment. I invite everyone to visit the Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion at Moore Farm, which highlights the fascinating history of agriculture and forestry in the Outaouais Region.”

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage

The National Capital Commission is delighted that the Centre d’écologie et de l’agriculture urbaine de Gatineau has brought the historic Moore Farm to life by offering a hands-on urban agriculture experience to visitors and residents as a Confederation Pavilion celebrating Canada’s sesquicentennial.

Dr. Mark Kristmanson, Chief Executive Officer, National Capital Commission

With all the educational outreach that we’re doing in this year of Canada’s150th anniversary, the Centre d’écologie et de l’agriculture urbaine de Gatineau is able to offer its expertise beyond the limits of the farm fence. I hope that the allure of nature and farming will bring you to visit the Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion!

Programming at the Centre d’écologie et d’agriculture de Gatineau

Exciting guided tours of bird gardens, ethnobotanical gardens, market gardens and community gardens, as well as the urban apiary-school Apicentris and production gardens for MosaïCanada 150, are offered at the Centre.

In the summer, various institutions offer theme-based summer camps for children aged 8 to 12. The full program will be announced on the Centre d’écologie et de l’agriculture urbaine de Gatineau website at least one week before the activities.

In addition to participating in these activities, visitors will also have an opportunity to see the exhibition entitled:

  •  “Les sèves du temps,” about the history and transformation of the Moore Farm over the years from the past to the present day, and about Brother Marie-Victorin, founder of the Montréal Botanical Garden. Another theme-based exhibition will be presented later this year.
  • “L’Apéro classique” concerts will return on Sundays, July 16, August 13 and September 17, 201

To complete their visit of the Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion, visitors can enjoy delicious local products served in a unique setting at the Centre’s Café-Bistro, or have brunch at the Moore Farm, served Sundays from 10 am to 1 pm.
