On Sunday morning, January 31, at 8 a.m., the NCC will open two new sections of the Rideau Canal Skateway to skaters - from Concord rest area to the Pretoria Bridge and from the Bank Street Bridge to Bronson Avenue, including Dows Lake. With the opening of these two new sections, the Skateway can now welcome skaters from Delaware Avenue (1.3 km) to Bronson Avenue (7.2 km). Please note that the Waverley stairs at km 1.2 will not be accessible until further notice.

The NCC’s Rideau Canal Skateway team and Ice Safety Committee have deemed that these additional sections of the Rideau Canal Skateway are safe for skating.

Due to current provincial measures, this additional outdoor space will provide those living in the more densely populated areas along the Rideau Canal more room to exercise this winter while physical distancing. We are suggesting that residents across the National Capital Region access those NCC assets closest to their home, within their province of residence.

The Rideau Canal Skateway team will continue working to open other sections of the world’s largest skating rink as soon as ice conditions are safe and weather permits. In the meantime, the NCC reminds the public to not venture onto closed sections of the Skateway.
