About the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Park Plan

The plan will focus on a 13-kilometre stretch of federal lands that include the parkway, pathways, trails and parklands, and that connects to our nation’s historical, cultural and political centre. It extends from Rideau Hall at Princess Avenue at its western extremity to the terminus of the parkway in the Greenbelt at St. Joseph Boulevard at its eastern extremity.

The renewal of the plan aims to:

  • Foster active living and enhance quality of life in the National Capital Region.
  • Build on the environmental, scenic, recreational and cultural qualities of the park.
  • Acknowledge public desire for safe, all season access to the shoreline.
  • Achieve environmental, urban design and sustainability objectives.

KEY FACTS

  • The Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway corridor runs along the shore of the majestic Ottawa River - a designated Canadian Heritage River - and is a wonderful place to appreciate the natural beauty of our region.
  • The area has long been regarded as a signature feature of the Capital. As both steward and planner of federal lands in the National Capital Region, the NCC is responsible for protecting and preserving the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway for all Canadians.
  • This initiative flows from the NCC’s corporate plan, and its focus on shoreline activation and placemaking. It will complement the Ottawa River north and south shore plans.
