Plus updates on the parkway schedule heading into fall
Published on September 1, 2021
Over the past 18 months, the National Capital Commission (NCC) has expanded public space across the region to facilitate people’s enjoyment of outdoor activities, while regularly reporting on usage. This summer has seen record-breaking use of NCC assets. This includes the following:
- Over 657,000 visits (and counting!) in 2021 on NCC parkways open exclusively for active use, compared with 525,000 visits during the same time frame in 2020 — which represents an increase of 25 percent.
- Close to 22,269 overnight stays in Gatineau Park booked so far in 2021, which exceeds the total amount for the 2020 season of 21,500 overnight stays. There is still time to book your experience, as the season ends October 11, 2021.
As we shift from summer to fall, check the updates below to help in planning your next outing.
Labour Day: Last day to enjoy NCC beaches
This long weekend, escape the heat, and take a dip at an NCC beach one last time. Monday, September 6, 2021, will be the last day this season to enjoy the NCC’s ever-popular beaches, open from 10 am to 6 pm in Gatineau Park, and from 10 am to 7 pm in Leamy Lake Park. In total this season, NCC beaches will have seen 81 days of swimming and summer fun. For details about the beaches status, water quality and facilities, visit our swimming page.
Gatineau Park parkways pilot project
Building on public feedback, the second year of the Gatineau Park parkways pilot project continues its summer schedule. The parkways will be open for active use most of the time, balanced with vehicle access on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons (1 pm to 30 minutes after sunset), until September 24, 2021.
As we roll into fall, a new schedule for Gatineau Park parkways will take effect on September 25, 2021. The Champlain, Gatineau and Fortune Lake parkways will be open for active use daily until noon, and then shared with motor vehicles from noon until 30 minutes after sunset. Check out our schedule for more information.
Parkways for people
Starting at 8 pm on September 6, 2021, until October 11, 2021, Colonel By Drive will be open for active use on weekends only (including Labour Day and Thanksgiving), 8 am to 4 pm, from Daly Avenue to Canal Woods Terrace.
NCC Weekend Bikedays, presented by Nokia
As part of the NCC Weekend Bikedays, presented by Nokia, active users will continue to have exclusive access every weekend (including Labour Day and Thanksgiving) to the Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier parkways, 8 am to 4 pm until October 11, 2021 (Thanksgiving).
A big thanks to our partners, Nokia, Claridge Homes, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada and ServicePlus, for their contributions to this program!
It’s not over yet!
We make it easy for people to rediscover less-visited areas and hidden gems of the Capital with our summer activities interactive map. Just select an activity, and the sharable map will suggest options within the downtown core, the Greenbelt or Gatineau Park!
Don’t forget to visit one of the NCC Bistros, and enjoy an assortment of fresh food and refreshments while taking in exceptional views.
