A section of the Champlain Lookout retaining wall is closed due to a collapse. In order to reopen this important destination in Gatineau Park for everyone to enjoy year-round, work to reconstruct the retaining wall of the Champlain Lookout will begin Monday, July 13, 2020. The work should be completed by the end of fall 2020.

To ensure safety of park users during the work, some portions of the Champlain Parkway and the Fortune Lake Parkway will be closed to all active users, Monday to Friday, from 6 am to 5 pm:

  • Champlain Parkway:
    • closed from the intersection of Fortune Lake Parkway up to the Étienne Brûlé Lookout
      • will reopen to active users at 5 pm
    • closed between the Étienne Brûlé Lookout and Champlain Lookout at all times
  • Fortune Lake Parkway:
    • closed between Champlain Parkway and Dunlop Road
      • will reopen to active users at 5 pm
    • access to parkway via trails 3, 9, 32 and 36 not allowed during the work
  • The two parkways:
    • Both parkway sections will be open on Saturday and Sunday to active users
    • Motor vehicles will be allowed on the parkways on Sunday afternoons, from 1 pm until sunset.
  • The Champlain Lookout will be closed at all times during the work.

Work includes the removal of the existing wall stones, the installation of a new structural concrete retaining wall, and reinstatement of the masonry stones. The reinstated wall will have a similar look to the original lookout wall.

We urge all users to respect working crews and equipment, obey signage and flag persons at the site, and to avoid the area during the work.
