The recruitment is temporarily suspended due to ongoing rehabilitation work on the Maplelawn Wall.

Help maintain the Maplelawn Garden, a haven of tranquility and National Historic Site in Ottawa.

The Friends of Maplelawn Garden, a group of volunteers working closely with the NCC, have been preserving and maintaining the walled garden since 1993.

Description

Title: Volunteer Gardener
Location: Maplelawn Garden

Under the supervision of the NCC team and the volunteer coordinators, the volunteer will maintain the garden throughout the growing season. The work of volunteers helps to ensure continuing respect for and enhancement of the garden’s heritage character.

Tasks include grooming, weeding, deadheading, planting, splitting and other related tasks. Volunteers must follow protocols for the care and security of gardening tools and the garden shed.

The work is performed outdoors, and requires the appropriate footwear and clothing. The NCC will provide the necessary equipment, including tools, a volunteer vest and a parking pass.

Commitment and schedule

Volunteers must be available approximately two hours per week, on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings, between 6 am and noon, from April to October.

There will be information sessions, meetings and additional training provided to volunteers.

Requirements

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Have knowledge of the Maplelawn Garden and its history
  • Have gardening knowledge or experience
  • Be capable of doing manual work
  • Be capable of working in variable weather conditions
