Canada’s Capital Region — The National Capital Commission (NCC) is seeking public feedback on its draft Sustainable Development Strategy, 2018–2023, through a final online consultation, to be held from June 21 to July 12, 2018. This consultation will help the NCC prioritize its actions.
Comments will contribute to the final draft of the strategy, which will be presented to the Board of Directors for approval in September 2018. This follows recent consultations with the public and various stakeholders from federal departments, municipalities, and non-governmental and community organizations, to gather ideas for the actions and targets of this new strategy.
The new strategy provides a focused and innovative agenda for environmental leadership in Canada’s Capital Region which will ensure the integration of environmental and social perspectives into daily decision making. It also reflects the NCC’s commitment to protecting our natural and cultural heritage; improving the health and well-being of all residents and visitors; and working with partners, stakeholders and the public to continue building a greener and more sustainable Capital Region.

- The strategy contributes to 10 of the 13 goals of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy.
- It is founded on six principles: leadership, public participation, social equity, collaboration, valuing natural capital in decision making, transparency and accountability.
- The strategy is supported by 34 actions, focusing on climate change action, building resilient infrastructure, protecting biodiversity and water quality, promoting sustainable agriculture and safe and healthy communities, and connecting Canadians with nature.
This new sustainable development strategy builds on the NCC’s first corporate environmental strategy, entitled Building a Greener Capital. The NCC’s Board of Directors today approved the final environment report (2009–2017) associated with that strategy.
